From Practice to Experience

    Why is Project Management Important?

According to the Chaos Report by The Standish Group, only nine to 16 percent of all software projects are completed on time and on budget. A staggering 31 percent of projects are canceled before they are completed, and 52 percent of projects cost 189 percent over their original estimates.

At P2E, we believe, along with other industry experts like Capers Jones and the Software Engineering Institute, that the cause is a lack of effective project management.

In fact, the Chaos Report found that without the following success factors, the chance of failure increases dramatically: proper planning, realistic expectations, smaller milestones, and clear vision and objectives.

Long-term, software project management expertise is a capability that companies develop through a combination of experience and formal training. Short-term, existing projects need to meet their performance targets in order for a company to be profitable.

Our Philosophy on Project Management--A Way of Thinking, a Mode of Operation

Most of us at one point or another have been involved in a project, be it:

    • By being a member of a team in a volunteer organization or on the job,
    • By working on a term project in a college course,
    • By embarking on a new business venture, or
    • By remodeling our house

    •
In all of these cases, our objective is:

To get the job done with quality, on time and within budget.

Project management suggests a way of thinking and a mode of operation, which help us to complete our goals with quality, on time and within budget. For more information, on P2E's philosophy, click here
